A new benefit of Viagra emerges

Viagra was launched in 1998 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and it took the world by storm with its efficacy. It changed the sexual lives of several millions of young and old men around the world. In fact, due to its effectiveness and popularity, it is being seen as the general name for all the drugs used for the enhancement of sexual performance. Now, another benefit of the drug has been discovered. It works for the treatment of babies that do not have enough oxygen in their brain during child birth.

This discovery has gotten researchers and healthcare providers excited as it could be a major breakthrough for poor countries that lack sophisticated medical equipment found in hospitals in developed countries.

The disease is called asphyxia. It is a condition in which the brain and other vital organs of a baby suffer inadequate or total lack of blood or oxygen during child birth. The condition is usually treated with hypothermia, a therapy meant for cooling the body of the baby to a temperature as low as 33.5 degrees centigrade.

According to a reliable report, the condition accounts for the death of newborn babies all over the world. To make matters worse, some of the babies that manage to survive also end up with serious conditions like cerebral palsy.

While it is not news that Viagra is given to babies with increased blood pressure in their lungs, it has never been used for the treatment of birth asphyxia before the new discovery. Viagra was found to have alleviated brain damage, poor movements and other functional deficits in rats. In addition, it also increased the number of nerve cells in their brains. This was what prompted some researchers in Canada to try the drug with human babies. The first study was carried out with 12 babies and the result was encouraging although it was not published.

Apart from increasing the amount of oxygen in their brains, the drug also eases blood flow in babies. The most interesting part is that no side effects has been identified in any baby so far. One of the researchers said the drug is quite affordable so poor countries will be able to afford it. This implies that the cases of birth asphyxia will definitely reduce all over the world.

Viagra is said to be helpful for brain damage in babies too. While it may not reverse the damage, it will reduce the impact of the damage considerably. It could also prevent brain damage from getting worse.

Originally, Sildenafil was formulated in the United Kingdom for the treatment of cardiac issues. It was later noticed that the drug improved erection in men. The founders now explored the option of using it as a sexual performance enhancing drug and that the brand Viagra emerged.

It became the fastest selling drug of all time due to its efficacy. However, there are new cheaper but effective imitation drugs and this has recently reduced Viagra’s sales tremendously.

The drug is also used for multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease. On its use on babies with lack of oxygen in the brain, further research is still being carried out. Considering its number of uses, it will be an understatement to say Viagra is a wonder drug.
